Best Comfort Foods to Pack On The Go – Onion Fritters

Onion Fritters– Our hot lunch recipe wagon presents a hot lunch you can take to work or school.  Our recipes are quick, easy and less than 30 minutes to cook.  Cook our recipes the night before, refrigerate and reheat the next day.  Or, on the other hand, you can cook our meals and freeze them for next week’s lunch.  Our special today is Onion Fritters ( Pyaaz Pakoras)

Pakoras are batter – fried snacks usually eaten as an appetizer.  The batter is made of spiced chickpea or gram flour and is used to coat vegetables or fish to create a variety of fritters.  On Indian restaurant menus you will also see pakoras listed as bhajis or bhajias


Scant 1 ½  cups chickpea or gram flour

3 onions, diced

1 teaspoon cumin seeds, crushed

¼ teaspoon chili powder

1 teaspoon coriander seeds, crushed

½ teaspoon salt

Vegetable oil for deep frying


the flour into a bowl. Include the onions, cumin, and coriander seeds, chili powder, and salt together.  Make a well in the middle, add ¼ cup water to the well, and then mix with a fork until the mixture forms a thick stiff batter.  If it appears runny, add extra flour.


a measure of oil for deep frying in a heavy bottomed saucepan over high heat or in a deep fat fryer to 375 degrees F, or until a small drop of the batter sizzles fiercely in the oil.


1 tablespoon of the batter into the oil, fry about 1 minute or until it turns golden brown


the fritter from the oil with a spoon and drain.  Taste the fritter, adjust seasoning , adding more salt or chili powder if necessary.


the rest of the fritters, use batches to avoid crowding the pan if necessary.  Remove pieces of fried batter from the oil and reheat the oil to the right temperature then add each new batch.  These fritters can be fried and reheated in an oven at 350 degrees F 10 minutes before serving. Pack warm in a heated lunch tote for a hot lunch on the go.
